A little piece of my life lately

And here we are in April already and March came and went really quickly, but I couldn't let it pass without sharing a little reflection with you.

This month always carries a deeper meaning for me. With daffodils blooming everywhere, I’m reminded of hope, resilience, and all those touched by cancer - the survivors and the ones we hold in our hearts. Writing this hasn’t been the easiest, as I’m navigating my own battle right now. Some days are tougher than others, and focus can vary from day to day so thank you for your patience - it truly means a lot.
World Book Day
March started strong with World Book Day, which is always a big celebration in our home. Books are such a huge part of my life, and I love passing that passion on to my children. My youngest son loves Harry Potter books (he actually prefers me to read it to him, but that's okay too) so he chose to dress as Ron Weasley, Harry's best friend. I ordered a costume which arrived complete with a very orange wig - definitely brighter than I expected - but he wore it proudly and looked absolutely adorable. I was so proud of him and he definitely stood out!

Fresh air and simple joys
Finally the weather cheered up and we made the most of it with long walks in the forest and enjoyed fresh sea air at the beach. We're so lucky to live somewhere that offers both woodland and coastline. Even when the weather isn't perfect, we always find a way to get outside. If you asked me what is my favourite thing to do, I'd say a long walk by the sea or in the forest. It cleanses my body and soul.

Mother's Day
Here in the UK, Mother's Day is in March. I always say you can't go wrong with a bunch of flowers and a box of delicious chocolates but this year my hubby surprised me with a wild garlic hunt. It might not sound special for some people but for me it was the best day ever! We spent the day outdoors searching and laughing and made a wild garlic pesto afterwards - it goes perfectly with pasta or spread on sourdough with poached eggs.

Finding strength
I also had the privilege of giving an inspirational talk at the local Women's Institute. It always surprises me when people say they find me inspiring - because there are many days when I feel anything but. Life can sometimes feel like a constant battle. Some days you're at rock bottom and other days you find the strength to rise up again. What these WI meetings make me realise is how powerful it is when women support each other. I even shared a few lines from my second book, which I've already started writing. If you haven't read the first, there's still a chance to get it from my website. Get it here.

A sweet escape with friends
One of the highlights of my month was a little trip to Liverpool to reunite with my fellow bakers. Before Bake Off I'd rarely travel alone but now I find so much joy in it. It was a special day catching up with Gill, Mike, Andy, Sumayah as well as Nadia (from Bake Off 2025), Lizzie (from Bake Off 2021) and the Hayley from Bake Off Professional 2024. It was just fabulous to spend the day with these beauties and exchange new tips about baking and just have a catch up.

A delicious finale
And of course I finished the month with something extra special - being invited as guest of honour at the grand opening of a lovely little patisserie in Lymington - Bakelicious. There were cakes, conversations, selfies and so many wonderful new faces. I absolutely love chatting with people - about life, baking and everything in between. It did get me thinking - maybe a podcast should me my next move. What do you think?

And just like that, March was gone. Now we're in April and I'm reminding myself to slow down and enjoy the small moments and embrace what comes next with positivity. Here's to what is left of April - I'm ready for the fight and the fun!
Here's what people are saying about my book:
"Oh Nelly, I received your book today, I just couldn't put it down. What a brilliant read, it had me in tears. What a wonderful lady you are. I can't wait for the next two books to be published."
"My dearest Nelly, I just finished reading your book - I'm crying and can't wait for the next two to come. Wow, wow, wow! Absolutely breathtaking. You are truly an incredible and inspirational woman."
